On APRIL 21st, 2015 Google is going to remove your site from its mobile listings!

Hello, my name is Cory Perquin. I am a web designer and internet marketing specialist (SEO) living and running my business in Guelph.

I do not usually approach businesses with this kind of "Doom & Gloom" pitch but today's circumstances are in fact very gloomy for a lot of local business owners.

There is a big change happening over at Google on April 21st, 2015. They are trying to focus more on mobile friendly websites in their search results.

The problem is that they have taken a very cut and dry approach to this latest update. Either your website is mobile friendly or it isn't. There are no degrees of mobile friendly.

I have been keeping an eye on things at a local level and I am astounded at how many websites for Guelph small business owners are not up to code and will therefore be all but wiped out when this update hits.

I am amazed that nobody has contacted you yet to warn you about what this means for your company.

I have tried my best to explain on this page, exactly what is going on and why you will be affected. Please have a read and for the sake fo your business, at least scan through it sooner than later.

At the very end, I have put together some service packages that you can purchase from me, that will prevent anything bad from happening to your website when the update rolls out.

I would absolutely like to help you fix this problem right away. That being said, even if you choose not to use my services...

PLEASE find someone to help you out BEFORE APRIL 21st, 2015. I do not want to look at the search results on the 22nd and see a ton of local businesses vanish without a trace.

Particularly when avoiding it all is actually quite simple.

Check Your Websites MOBILE STATUS LIVE

Many websites and business owners are going to be affected by the April 21st update.

Google has published a tool for you to check if your site is mobile friendly or not.

Simply copy your websites URL (name) into the search box and Google will scan it completely.

When the scan is done, you will see a bold message that indicates whether your site has passed or failed.

Failure means removal from mobile search results after April 21st, 2015.

If I have contacted you it means that I have already tested your site and it has failed. If you would like to double check my results, you can run the same test by

The only reason not to have updated your website to be mobile friendly is lack of knowledge. It isn't your fault you didn't know how important this is or how massive this Google update is going to be.

Many local business owners do not know much about how their website works. That is why there are people like me who specialize in mastering all the moving parts.

Let me help you fix this problem, right now, before April 21st, 2015.

Most of your competition are unaware of this huge update. You have an opportunity to take a competitive advantage over any who don't manage to become mobile friendly in time.

Mobile searchers look for local businesses. According to one comScore report, 78% of mobile phone owners use their devices to conduct local searches.

So what is an algorithm and why do you need to change your website?

It is not surprising that only a small number of local business owners keep up to date with the most recent changes at Google.

Let me be your guide. Let me worry about what Google is doing and let you focus on what you know best.

Here is a really basic breakdown of what is going to happen on April 21st, 2015 and why your website is in trouble:

  1. An algorithm is another word for the "fancy computer math" that Google uses to decide what websites rank higher than others when you search for something.
  2. Google considers it a priority to show ultra relevant search results for all devices. They constantly tweak their algorithm to provide better results.
  3. As smartphones become more and more popular, Google is forced to place a higher value on websites that look and work on mobile devices.
  4. The algorithm update that will begin on April 21st, 2015 is meant to remove any websites that are not mobile friendly from mobile search results.
  5. This new algorithm update is "All or Nothing". Websites that fail this test after April 21st will lose any rankings they currently have.
  6. When tested using Googles official tool, your website failed to meet their criteria for being mobile friendly.

Wait There Is Still Hope!

Just because you have some problems with your website right now doesn't mean you can't fix them before the update.

In many cases, it can be a simple change to a little bit of code behind your website. Some websites however will require a little more elbow grease to bring them up to date.

For sites that may need that extra work, there is a quick and easy way to make them mobile compliant. This will not fix some of the bigger issues your site may have, but it will absolutely prevent your site from being kicked out of the search results on April 21st.

You Have An Opportunity to Leap Frog Your Competition

Most of Them Also Need Help!

You have just under 3 weeks to get your site under control. Whether it be a complete upgrade or the simple fix suggested below, the time to act is right now.

If you make the required changes and your competition doesn't, you will be rewarded with higher rankings than ever. This is a huge opportunity.

You can check them for yourself using the testing tool above, but believe me when I say that even some of the major players in your market are going to be caught off guard. I can't believe how many sites I am finding that are failing the test.

A Brief History of Google Updates

There have been a number of Google Algorithm updates that have had a significant impact on both global and local search results. Here is a quick glimpse of some of the bigger updates to have taken place.

For a complete account of all past Google updates read this

Penguin Update
(4% Impact)

An algorithm update to better catch sites deemed to be spamming its search results, in particular those doing so by buying links or obtaining them through link networks designed primarily to boost Google rankings.

Panda Update
(12% Impact)

An algorithmic filter meant to stop sites with poor quality content from working their way into Google's top search results. Panda is updated from time-to-time. When this happens, sites previously hit may escape, if they've made the right changes.

Pigeon Update
(Local Impact)

An algorithm to provide more useful, relevant and accurate local search results that are tied more closely to traditional web search ranking signals. Google stated that this new algorithm improves their distance and location ranking parameters.

This change in the algorithm is meant to give more weight to sites that are either mobile responsive, have a focused mobile site, or have a mobile app.

With updates like Panda and Penguin, the algorithm changes were more nuanced and affected a smaller number of sites. The Mobile-friendly update (which has yet to acquire an animal name) has a much clearer purpose and will put your site into one of two categories, Mobile-Friendly and Non-Mobile friendly.

It blows my mind that nobody has contacted you about this yet. This is really important info for any local business. The impact will be HUGE.... but here is the important bit.

There are 3 SIMPLE FIXES that can save your site before April 21st, 2015.

You only need to do one of them!

Here is a breakdown of what Google suggests you do to fix your mobile issues

  1. Create a Mobile Landing Page to display to anyone visiting your website from a mobile device (smartphone).
  2. Create a complete Mobile Version of your website so that all content is displayed effectively on mobile devices.
  3. Redesign your existing website using a Responsive Layout that will rearrange content depending on the device being used to view it.

  1. 1) QUICK FIX (Bandaid)

Create a Mobile Landing Page for your business that includes your logo, a google map, all pertinent contact information and a contact form directed to any email of your choice.

This is your emergency fix. It will not do much for increasing rankings but it will allow you to pass Googles test and ensure you don't disappear from mobile search results.

This is the MINIMUM REQUIREMENT for being considered mobile friendly by Google.

  2. 2) COMPLETE MOBILE WEBSITE (up to 20 pages)

Create a duplicate version of your existing website that is designed ONLY FOR MOBILE visitors. Customers visiting your site on tablets and desktop computers or laptops will still see your current site.

This shows Google that you care about your user experience and how people interact with both your website and your business.

This is a great option if you have a smaller budget but would like to do a little more than the bare minimum for your customers.

Keeping in mind the stats shown above, it makes a lot of sense to cater to your customers mobile experience. There are more and more of them each day!

Take all of your existing content and bring it up to date with a modern website layout technique known as Responsive Design.

This method of coding your website is hands down the best option and it is specifically suggested by Google, as the best fix for website owners looking to become mobile friendly.

Responsive Design allows your websites content to rearrange itself depending on what kind of device is being used. On a desktop or laptop you get nice wide open design that elegantly structures itself and stacks as you reduce the size of the viewing screen.

Sounds confusing right? For an example, try shrinking your browser window right now and see how the content on this page changes as it gets smaller.

I recognize that 3 weeks is not exactly an ideal amount of time for many business owners to make major decisions about their websites.

To make it a little easier to pull the trigger and move forward with your mobile update, I have knocked $200 off of my standard pricing for all the packages listed above.

In order to become mobile friendly you MUST have a mobile landing page at the MINIMUM.

At $200 the cost of this update can be recouped with just a few customers. The cost of not updating before April 21st, 2015 will end up being quite a bit more as all your competitors get all that mobile traffic each month.

Some of you will need longer to decide on your preferred course of action. Maybe you have been thinking about redesigning for a while but just don't have room in the budget yet.

I want to take care of you as well!

I am very interested in working with local business owners long term to address all of their needs. I am a local business owner myself and I would like to see all of us prosper.

So here is the deal... If you purchase a Mobile Landing Page from me before April 21st, 2015 I will rebate the entire $200 in the event that we end up doing more significant work on your website in the future.

This is a great way to secure your position now (possibly leap frogging your competition) and secure a nice little discount on your bigger project down the road.

My main objective for making this offer to you today is to keep the lights on. I am sure you know how difficult that is sometimes.

That being said, I am always up for some bartering. I think it is a great way for local businesses to connect and nurture relationships that become genuine and not all about the money.

If you truly do not have a couple hundred dollars to spare in the next 3 weeks, I STILL WANT TO HELP.

Let me know what you may be able to offer me in exchange for getting you mobile compliant before this major deadline. I am open to all offers but please do not be offended if I turn some of you down.

If I don't need your particular service at the moment, I find REFERRALS to be a great place to start!
